Ischia is a sister island to Capri in the Bay of Naples and the setting of one of the protagonist’s first holidays in Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet, some of my favourite books. Although foreign tourists have discovered it, it is largely touristed by Italians - and Napoletans like my mother in particular. I found inspiration for my art in this group of Italian women, chatting away their cares, letting it all hang out, whilst enjoying the warm Mediterranean waters that surround the island. It reminded me of the open friendliness of my own mum.
