"I was lucky to join this one day portrait drawing from life.  I learnt a lot in few hours! Stella was a great tutor with her excellent way of teaching."
Hoda Hoteit Develop your portrait drawing skills 25 May 2021

"This is my first portrait from observation and my first in oil. When I saw Stella will teach a portrait course at Open Ealing  I immediately signed up and didn’t even notice it contained the word ‘oil’. First I met Stella a few years back during the Ealing BEAT, where she opened her doors and patiently explained to a stranger her working and thinking process, how and why she does things. She is also a great storyteller - as behind each painting is a story of a musician and how she became painting him/her…As I just found out I was one of 300 during that weekend…
"Now, during her portraiture course, I had that same gentle-patient attitude. We were a bunch of women artists with different aspirations, styles, skills and life experiences. And Stella approached each of us differently, and very gently pushed and challenged us accordingly...It has been absolute honour and joy to learn from such an amazing and inspirational artist. And I am truly amazed by all of our astonishing portraits of Imogen and seeing how they developed over the 6 days."

"Stella is an outstanding art tutor.  She delivered so much in those few lessons."

Drawing tutor in London's best-known galleries and museums

- For Sketchout 2013-2020

Until the introduction of epidemic restrictions in March 2020, I taught drawing for six years with Sketchout, which offered individuals dynamic drawing classes at some of London's most famous museums. No future dates have been planned

The workshops took place amongst the museums' inspiring collections and were open to people of all levels of drawing and artistic capability – from the complete beginner to the artistic/creative professional. The small class numbers allowed plenty of one-to-one tuition.

What my students said

It was a wonderful experience. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to be taught by you, in such great surroundings, with wonderful fellow students and a fabulous sitter for three days. I'm still in a state of peace.
Diane 3 Day Introduction to Portrait Painting in oils February 2020

Well I have to say it was a thoroughly enjoyable and productive day! Stella was so helpful throughout the day, with good tips and constructive feedback, her skills as an accomplished artist were very evident and added to my enjoyment of the day. I had not done any drawing for quite some years now, so the course has energised me and I plan to continue drawing on a more regular basis. I was so pleased with my drawing.

Just a line to thank you for a brilliant day. Apart from your excellent artistic skills you have a special talent as a teacher. You managed to impart a lot of material clearly but above all you gave us all confidence and made us feel we had some drawing skills that we should practice and explore. Many thanks for your help and patience."
S Davis 10 October 2015

Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Stella’s workshop last week at the V&A. She explained things so beautifully and was extremely encouraging and I think by the end of the day the group had produced some marvellous work and “bonded” very well.”
S Hewins Drawing workshop 8 March 2015

My feet have just touched ground again from the workshop last Sunday at the V&A. What an uplifting experience it was for me and I am sure the rest of the group. Can you please pass on my sincere thanks to Stella, her skill in transfering inspiration, techniques and skills across to us all was brilliant plus her lovely constructive helpful comments throughout the day has truely rekindled my desire to draw and paint and to get out there and fill the sketch book and hopefully develop and improve. I believe now that I can draw and will be booking for the next workshop in due course.
K Drury Drawing workshop 23 March 2014

Just to say, had a wonderful time on the drawing course today! Stella was a brilliant and inspiring tutor. Not only did I learn a great deal but I also left the course buzzing!! I have been on quite a few courses and I have to say, this has been the best by far! It has inspired me to do the next class at some point, 'Fundamentals 2' and carry on with my drawing to the next level. Please would you pass on my thanks to Stella for all the creativity and inspiration she provided today.
A Silvestre Drawing workshop 16 March 2014

I would like to say how much we enjoyed our day workshop at the V&A run by Stella Tooth. It was most enjoyable and informative. Stella managed to find something nice to say about all of our attempts at drawing a subject that we had never touched before, being the human form. We run an informal art group ourselves and the people in our group were most interested in how the day had gone and I am sure some of them will be looking to having a Sketchout experience at some future date.
