Bar Italia was started in the winter of 1949 by Lou and Caterina Polledri. The couple saw an opportunity for a cafe in Soho, which could also act as social centre for the Italian community in London, offering good coffee which was hard to come by back then.  Soho was then a big Italian area and so it followed that Bar Italia was a success from the start.  The red and white formica is an important part of the Bar and original pieces remain from 1949. The Gaggia coffee machine has been there fifty years now.  Bar Italia has the look of a classic Italian cafe. And I’m proud - myself being half Italian - that my images of staff and these customers are now on its walls.

Pencil on paper. Framed.
