Sting is an English musician, singer, songwriter and actor. He was frontman, songwriter and bassist for The Police from 1977 to ‘86. With them he became one of the world’s best-selling music artists with famous songs including ‘Roxanne’ and ‘Message in a bottle’. He performed at Live Aid.
In his early career, Sting played jazz in the evening, weekends and during breaks from college and teaching, with the Phoenix Jazzmen, where he got his nickname rom his habit of wearing a black and yellow jumper with hooped stripes. Sting supports his hometown Newcastle United football club, who have a black and white strip. This explains my use of black, yellow and white in the background of my image of Sting, based on a behind the scenes photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie.
Sol says, “Stella has really captured the Sting ‘stare’ which came from his reluctance to be photographed when he arrived backstage at his own gig. Sting has always been stylish dresser and his flamboyant side comes shining through in this painting.”
