Eric Clapton CBE is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter, widely considered one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time.   A member of the 1960s blues influenced rock and roll band The Yardbirds, he later formed the power trio ‘Cream’ and joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the clearing house for guitarists.

Clapton, who played the lead guitar in 1968 on George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, became infatuated with his  close friend Harrison’s wife Pattie Boyd. When she, at first, spurned his advances he co-wrote ‘Layla’, inspired by Clapton's reading of the classic Persian unrequited love story, the epic poem Layla and Manjun.

Like Hank Marvin, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, Clapton had widespread influence in popularising particular models of electric guitar.

The digital painting is based on a behind the scenes photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie.  Sol says, “Been a fan of Eric Clapton since the early days with 461 Ocean Boulevard a particular favourite of mine. Eric played his Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar at this Wembley Arena gig and the image captures his unique stance and ‘slow hand’ playing style”.
