A biographical portrait - painted in retro colours - that I hope evokes memories of similar shared experiences or memories in the viewer.  It’s Naples 1946 and the southern Italian city has been ravaged by war. But out of hate comes love. My father, a British soldier who fought in North Africa with the Royal Engineers, rescues my mother, an interpreter for a British colonel, when he uses his skills as a carpenter/joiner to release the colonel’s keys she has inadvertently locked in her desk. After a courtship, they become one of the first couples to marry after the war and dad is sent home to demob.  My mum has to follow by train with the other war brides and this is her poignant last day, walking through the streets of her home city before she leaves her family and friends for a new life in a new country.

Oil on canvas. Framed.
