Ischia, sister island to Capri in the Bay of Naples, is the setting of the the protagonist's first holiday in Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan quartet. Touristed mostly by Italians, particularly Napoletans like my own mother, I found inspiration for this oil painting in the open friendliness of the women I viewed from an overlooking cafe, chatting cheerfully, enjoying the warm Mediterranean waters.
