Sitting next to Ossie's adopted mother at the Half Moon Putney, where I'm resident artist, we got talking about the fact that I'm also a portraitist. She liked what she heard about my collaborative approach to commissions and decided she would like to have a portrait drawn of Ossie, who was born in Guatemala. After consulting with Ossie and her husband, we booked in a visit my home studio for the first sitting. We had discussed Ossie bringing a couple of changes of clothes - things he was both comfortable in and would have longevity on the walls.  He came in a white shirt with neck open which suited his skin.  His adopted father bought a book of images of colourful Guatamalan homes with peeling paint exteriors.  He had been browsing on my website and seen that some of my musician art backgrounds had a similar, almost abstracted feel about them.  He asked if such as wall might form the backdrop to the portrait to link Ossie to his past, as well as his present.  I noted Ossie's colours at the sitting and also took photos of him with a soft light from the side to inform the British figurative art portrait.
