Freddie Mercury was a British singer, songwriter and lead vocalist of Queen with a four-octave vocal range. He designed the heraldic arms for Queen. It features his favourite colour – yellow – and red. He regularly wore yellow military jackets on stage. In heraldic terms yellow stands for honour and loyalty (which I use here to signify Mercury’s relationship with his fans) and red (which he wears) for courage. To these I add purple, meaning regal - a nod to the band’s name.
My digital painting is inspired by a photo by rock photographer Solomon N'Jie at The Works Tour, 7 September 1984 Wembley Arena. Sol says, “Freddie Mercury was renowned throughout his career for live performances, delivered with a distinct theatrical style, that always generated crowd participation. This picture captures Freddie, the man who could dominate any stage and hold an audience in the palm of his hand while clasping a broken microphone stand.”
