British singer, songwriter and DJ Boy George, here portrayed in androgynous costume, is literally wearing a mask of heavy make-up, but the lyrics of his hit, ‘Do you really want to hurt me’, are autobiographical. Julien Temple, the Director of the accompanying video, said the song, “was about being gay and being victimised for your sexuality, which George was kind of emblematic of.”

My portrait is inspired by a photograph by Getty rock photographer Solomon N'jie. Sol says, "Boy George has a wonderful singing voice, was visually stunning on stage and always put on memorable shows. You can get a sense of Boy George’s flamboyant nature from Stella’s portrait as experienced by the audience of the time."
