I caught the tightrope walker’s act in the back streets of Venice, shortly after crossing The Rialto bridge. More than her sky blue and white maid’s costume, and white face make-up, I was struck by the way she composed herself prior to her performance, leaning on the tree to which she had attached one end of the rope. Then her features relaxed and she stepped confidently onto the rope and in doing so, changed the mood of the crowd from slight anxious to entranced at the way she balanced with feather duster in one hand and tiny parasol in the other. Here I have shown her in both moods.
